based on an interview with Amogha-Lila Dasa
Question 1: What does it mean that Srila Prabhupada is the Founder-Acarya of ISKCON?
Answer:
Founder-Acarya means the person who lays the philosophical, spiritual, cultural, and administrative foundation of an institution. In ISKCON, Srila Prabhupada is the foundation of all philosophy, practice, etiquette, sadhana standards, temple administration, preaching, and relationships.
All teachings must align with his instructions, his commentaries on shastra are primary, and the songs and teachings of the acaryas in his disciplic line are of prime importance. All future shiksa gurus, diksa gurus, mentors, and guides function under his shelter.
Srila Prabhupada is not merely a shiksa guru; he is the shelter of all shiksa and diksa gurus. If any guru deviates from his teachings, that guidance must be rejected. Our bhakti, philosophy, preaching, temples, books, and services all rest upon his mercy and blessings.
Question 2: How should future generations be taught about Srila Prabhupada’s position?
Answer:
Future generations connect through stories, examples, and lived experiences. Every lecture and discourse should include Srila Prabhupada’s words, pastimes, qualities, and interactions. Seminars should focus on how he embodied the qualities of a pure devotee.
His appearance and disappearance days should be celebrated with seriousness and grandeur, with structured glorification and education. We should actively glorify Srila Prabhupada through festivals, lectures, social media, and public programs.
Although Srila Prabhupada glorified only Krishna, it is our duty to glorify him as Krishna’s empowered representative. There is ample glorification of Krishna; dedicating space to Srila Prabhupada strengthens devotion rather than diminishes it.
Question 3: What happens if we neglect preaching Srila Prabhupada’s glories?
Answer:
Our connection to Krishna comes through Srila Prabhupada. Without gratitude, faith, and attachment to him, our spiritual life loses depth. Guru-nistha determines Hari-nistha and Nama-nistha.
Without strong faith in Srila Prabhupada, our bhajana loses potency. Reading his books without personal connection leads to dryness. Studying his life through biographies and diaries deepens devotion and protects spiritual strength.
Question 4: How can newcomers build a relationship with Srila Prabhupada?
Answer:
Newcomers should hear about Srila Prabhupada, read simplified biographies, and watch accessible series such as Abhay Charan. These provide an engaging and emotional connection. Along with chanting and temple programs, learning about his life builds faith and gratitude naturally.
Question 5: How can one recognize reciprocation from Srila Prabhupada?
Answer:
Signs include attraction to his words, eagerness to hear his lectures, gratitude while chanting, and appreciation when seeing temples and preaching activities. Constant remembrance and introspection reveal the relationship developing.
Question 6: How did you personally build your relationship with Srila Prabhupada?
Answer:
By studying Srila Prabhupada-lilamrta, Prabhupada Nectar, Transcendental Diary, and other devotee accounts, and by deeply studying his purports. His Bhagavad-gita As It Is stood apart from all other commentaries due to his urgency to give Krishna directly.
Hearing from devotees deeply attached to Srila Prabhupada strengthened that connection further.
Question 7: How should devotees see one another in relation to Srila Prabhupada?
Answer:
Every devotee should be seen as nourished by Srila Prabhupada’s mercy. Whether strong or weak, preacher or beginner, all are under his shelter. Success in preaching belongs to Srila Prabhupada, not the individual.
Question 8: Which aspect of Srila Prabhupada touched you most?
Answer:
His compassion. He forgave fallen disciples, welcomed sinful people, empowered the weak, and never lost hope. He remained detached, merciful, and focused on uplifting souls, regardless of their condition.
Question 9: How would you explain Srila Prabhupada to someone unfamiliar with him?
Answer:
Srila Prabhupada was the greatest ambassador of Vedic culture to the modern world. He established temples worldwide, created devotees rather than audiences, translated and explained Vedic scriptures accessibly, distributed prasadam on a massive scale, and transformed global consciousness.
His books are taught in major universities, and ISKCON continues to expand decades after his disappearance—all by his mercy.
Question 10: How does Srila Prabhupada’s compassion help those living sinful lives?
Answer:
He entered the most sinful environments to uplift people. He tolerated offenses, embraced fallen disciples, and focused on gradual transformation. He established centers where maya was strongest, demonstrating his fearlessness and purity.
Question 11: How can a struggling devotee strengthen dedication through Srila Prabhupada?
Answer:
By taking sadhu-sanga of those sheltered under Srila Prabhupada. Affectionate, advanced, like-minded association restores strength and clarity.
Question 12: Why do devotees get attracted to non-ISKCON spiritual teachers?
Answer:
This happens due to “nectar shopping” and taking one’s own spiritual wealth cheaply. ISKCON has abundant qualified sadhus, but familiarity creates neglect. One must stay grounded in siddhanta and value the association available within Srila Prabhupada’s family.
Question 13: What is Guru-Guru-ism, and how can it be avoided?
Answer:
Guru-Guru-ism arises from immaturity and insecurity. Gurus should be honored privately, while publicly we act as soldiers of Srila Prabhupada’s mission. Communities should function as one family, celebrating all gurus equally.
The guru system is perfect; the problem lies in follower immaturity. Unity under Srila Prabhupada ensures effective preaching and harmony.
Closing
Srila Prabhupada is the heart of ISKCON. Our gratitude, unity, and spiritual strength depend on keeping him at the center.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
