Srila Prabhupada’s Position as the Founder-Acharya of ISKCON
Hare Krishna.
Today is the second day of our discussion of Srila Prabhupada’s position as the founder-acharya of ISKCON. Yesterday, I gave an overview of three main points:
The Three Key Points:
- Srila Prabhupada’s Role in Our Lives
He is the principal guiding factor. Even our respective gurus represent Srila Prabhupada. The main guiding factor is Prabhupada through his teachings. - The Necessity of the Institution of ISKCON
To effectively spread Krishna consciousness globally, we need an institution. Without an organised structure, preaching would not be effective. Thanks to ISKCON, a devotee can travel anywhere in the world and find a temple, a home, and support. This level of global coherence and hospitality would not exist without the institution.
For example, someone in Myanmar received a book in English, the Bhagavad Gita, and read it to learn English. In doing so, he became inspired by Srila Prabhupada’s teachings and eventually became a full-time devotee. This shows the reach and effectiveness of an institution like ISKCON. - How to Hold the Institution Together for Generations
Who else, at the age of 70, went to America, created a global spiritual movement in ten years, wrote over a hundred volumes, and established a worldwide society for Krishna consciousness?
Everyone wants to connect to a great personality. Srila Prabhupada’s achievements are unmatched, and his greatness will become more evident with time. As with Jesus Christ—whose glory took centuries to be recognised—Srila Prabhupada’s significance will only grow.
Establishing Srila Prabhupada’s Position
Srila Prabhupada showed great concern that his position always be recognised. He mandated that all his books display his full name and title prominently:
“His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Founder Acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.”
He instructed that this be used on official documents, publications, and signage.
In the early days, I noticed Prabhupada sometimes chastised devotees if his position wasn’t properly acknowledged. At first, this seemed at odds with his humility, but I later understood: he wasn’t concerned about personal recognition, but about the future of the movement. The institution must remain unified, and that unity is maintained by firmly establishing Srila Prabhupada’s position as founder-acharya, along with the authority of the GBC.
After Prabhupada’s departure, eleven gurus operated as if they were now the leaders of ISKCON, each over a zone. But that model did not sustain unity. The proper approach is that everyone functions as a representative of ISKCON, and ultimately of Srila Prabhupada.
The Foundational Link
Most devotees joined ISKCON due to Prabhupada’s books. When we first joined, we chanted Srila Prabhupada’s pranam mantra. This shows our foundational relationship is with him. Shiksha and diksha gurus are connected to Srila Prabhupada, and their authority stems from that connection.
Some may call this fanatical, but it is not blind following. It is based on reason, understanding, and purpose. Just as a soldier is not a fanatic but serves with conviction, ISKCON functions with clear purpose: to fulfil Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s mission.
As founder-acharya, Srila Prabhupada’s exemplary behaviour sets the standard for all ISKCON devotees. His spirit and mood pervade the institution. His standards—sixteen rounds, four regulative principles, daily classes, morning programmes—define our lifestyle. Wherever we go in ISKCON, we find the same standards. This is Srila Prabhupada’s legacy.
While we revere many great acharyas in our line, Srila Prabhupada holds a unique position as ISKCON’s founder-acharya. He remains the single prominent shiksha guru, generation after generation. He is the soul of ISKCON, and ISKCON is his body.
Prabhupada did not create something new but presented the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition in a way applicable to modern times. He wrote in English, established accessible standards (e.g., sixteen rounds instead of sixty-four), and allowed offerings from local cultures. His practical vision made the movement global and sustainable.
No one can take the position of founder-acharya of ISKCON. That role is reserved exclusively for Srila Prabhupada. The need for an institution and the clarity of Prabhupada’s role must be firmly established.
Questions and Answers
Q: What happens if a guru falls down? How does the institution protect the devotees?
A: That’s why we emphasise that the devotee’s primary relationship should be with Srila Prabhupada. If your foundation is Srila Prabhupada, your spiritual life won’t be shaken.
It’s like this: if you develop a relationship only with me, and something happens to me, you may feel lost. But if you understand that I am simply helping you connect with Srila Prabhupada, your spiritual path remains steady.
Analogy: Think of it like buying a Toyota car. You don’t care who the dealer is—you want the car. If the dealer changes, you still buy the Toyota. Similarly, we are here for Krishna consciousness. If someone leaves and we give up Krishna consciousness, that’s foolishness.
Q: What about the parampara?
A: Srila Prabhupada holds a unique role in ISKCON as its Founder-Acharya. ISKCON gurus act as via mediums between Srila Prabhupada and their disciples.
One godbrother rightly said, “Your worship will last only as long as your disciples are there, but Srila Prabhupada’s worship will go on forever.” Already, second-generation devotees are becoming gurus. The disciplic succession will continue within ISKCON, keeping Srila Prabhupada at the centre.

On Public Recognition
Q: Why are others with far fewer achievements more publicly recognised than Srila Prabhupada?
A: Because the world is obsessed with sense gratification. Someone preaching renunciation won’t be popular. Like owls who can’t see sunlight, people can’t recognise the glory of Srila Prabhupada. But the sun rises anyway. Those with eyes to see, will see.
