On Saturday, October 3, seventy-five devotees gathered in League City, Texas, south of Houston, to board a local riverboat. According to dandavats occasion marked the sixty-first anniversary of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s historic arrival in the United States, organized by the Houston Harinam Sankirtan group as part of their weekly street-chanting initiative. Following an earlier program in Katy, the team sought to carry the holy names across every town and village of the greater Houston metropolitan area. Moving out onto the water, they remembered the 1965 voyage of the steamship Jaladuta, which had brought the teachings of Lord Caitanya to the Western world.
A resonant kīrtana opened on the riverboat as the devotees chanted and danced across the deck in deep gratitude. Gathered together, they listened attentively to a narration detailing Śrīla Prabhupāda’s perilous ocean journey from Kolkata to Boston, reflecting on the faith and sacrifices that established ISKCON. To enter into his mood, the assembly collectively sang his Bengali prayer, Bhagavān Kṛṣṇer Pada-padme Prārthanā, also known as “Kṛṣṇa Tava Puṇya Habe Bhāi.” Singing the second verse reminded them of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s prophecy coming to fulfillment before their eyes, that the holy names would echo over every town, village, river, ocean, and stream.
In the days before the gathering, weather channels had issued warnings of severe storms and flooding across the region. Recalling how Lord Kṛṣṇa had miraculously calmed the Atlantic Ocean during Śrīla Prabhupāda’s journey, the organizers prayed earnestly to Houston’s presiding Deities, Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Nīlamādhava, for clear skies. Kṛṣṇa answered their prayers. Not a single drop of rain fell during the event, and a pleasant blanket of clouds sheltered the riverboat, keeping the heat of the Texas sun at bay throughout the afternoon.
As a gesture of appreciation for their hospitality on the water, the devotees presented boat Captain Jake and crew members Michelle and Cameron with copies of Founder-Acarya’s books and mahā-garlands from the temple Deities. Afterward, everyone honored a prasādam feast featuring veggie burgers, potato chips, and carob cake. Energized by the spiritual bliss of the voyage, the devotees expressed excitement about making the riverboat anniversary celebration an annual Houston tradition.
