One of the most important discussions taking place within ISKCON today concerns the position of Srila Prabhupada. Speaking on this subject, Gauranga Das emphasized that ISKCON must continue to increasingly recognize Srila Prabhupada as both the Founder-Acarya and ISKCON central guide.
He explained:
“Like in Sri Sampradaya, Sripada Ramanujacharya is the preeminent and practically all the others now are following in his footsteps. And they are representing him. So, ISKCON also needs to move in that direction by giving more and more importance to Srila Prabhupada as the Founder of ISKCON, as the center of ISKCON.”
According to Gauranga Das, there is a growing recognition among many leaders that Srila Prabhupada should be given greater prominence within the movement:
“I do agree with some of the observations made by other groups where they feel that Srila Prabhupada has not been given as much importance as he should be. And people like Bhanu Maharaj and myself and some others, we all feel that there should be certain changes made within ISKCON the way things are happening. And changes must happen in the way the guru system is being run.”
He further explained that the future unity of ISKCON depends upon carefully preserving Srila Prabhupada’s unique position:
“To make Srila Prabhupada more prominent because when Prabhupada departed he had 5,000 odd disciples. Now when Prabhupada’s disciples depart, you will be left with almost 200,000 of next-generation initiated devotees who can potentially become gurus. Unless we really calibrate the future very carefully by looking at the past and looking at what should have been Prabhupada’s intention of keeping him as the Founder-Acarya very carefully, then we will, as they say, miss the game. And it will be too late. And then there will be too much fragmentation.”
For this reason, he argues that maintaining unity requires keeping Srila Prabhupada at the center:
“In order to maintain the unity of ISKCON and maintain the mission around ISKCON, we need to see how to balance that diversity with the unity.”
Gauranga Das also highlighted Srila Prabhupada’s unparalleled contribution to the Gaudiya Vaisnava tradition through his translations and commentaries:
“Although Srila Prabhupada has given so many books, now translated more than 80 books in English language…” Prabhupada was the perfect example of combining deep spiritual realization with ISKCON leadership:
“Srila Prabhupada himself was a fantastic example where he would spend like 12 at night to 5 or 6 in the morning translating books… Srila Prabhupada meditating on each and every verse, going deep, and speaking into the dictaphone. And then in the morning walk, he would start giving instruction on building the Temple in Mayapur or buying this property or that property.”
Thus, Prabhupada’s position is not merely historical. He remains the theological center, the Founder-Acarya, the primary authority, and the unifying figure around whom ISKCON’s future must be organized. Future gurus, leaders, and devotees are meant to represent him and continue his mission, while ensuring that his prominence remains undiminished for generations to come.
